Getting started
What is SubletU?
SubletU is a marketplace built specifically for university students and recent grads to find or post short-term sublets near campus. Every poster is verified with a .edu email so you're not gambling on a stranger from a Facebook group.
Is SubletU free to use?
Yes. Posting a listing and contacting a poster are both free for verified students.
Who can use SubletU?
Anyone with a valid .edu email — current students, exchange students, summer interns, and recent grads relocating near campus.
Which schools are supported?
Any school with a .edu email domain works. We're currently most active around Johns Hopkins, NYU, Boston University, and Stanford, with new schools added every week.
Verification & safety
How does .edu verification work?
When you sign up, you confirm a code sent to your university email. Once verified, you get a Verified Student badge that appears on your profile and on every listing or inquiry you send.
What if a poster ghosts me or seems sketchy?
Use the Report button on any listing or profile. Our team reviews every report and removes bad actors. Reporting is anonymous to the other party.
Are listings inspected?
We require photos on every listing and check for obviously fraudulent posts, but we don't physically tour units. Always video-call a poster and ask for live photos before sending money.
What scams should I watch out for?
Never wire money to a poster you haven't video-called. Never sign anything before seeing the unit (in person or via live video). If a price seems too good to be true, it usually is.
For posters
How long does it take to post a listing?
Most posters finish a listing in under five minutes. You'll need basic info, dates, price, and at least one photo.
Why are photos required?
Listings without photos get almost no inquiries and look suspicious. Even one phone photo of the room dramatically improves your response rate.
Can I edit my listing after posting?
Yes. You can edit any field, change photos, or take down the listing at any time from your dashboard.
How do I get more inquiries?
Verified posters with photos and complete structured fields (price, dates, room type, neighborhood) appear higher in search and get the most messages.
Payments & cancellations
Does SubletU process payments?
Not yet. SubletU connects you with a verified poster — payment, deposits, and lease agreements are handled directly between you and the poster, like a normal sublet.
What payment method should I use?
Use a method that has buyer protection (e.g. Zelle through your bank, or a verifiable rental platform). Avoid one-way wires to people you've never met in person or on video.
What if my plans change after I commit?
Cancellation terms are between you and the poster — make sure you both write down the agreement before money changes hands.
